Haiti EarthQuake

What I can't believe right now is that I haven't done a post about this yet! Now here's my paranoid rant about what went wrong with the earthquake and the rescue effort:

Haiti, with the capital of Port-au-Prince, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. That means only those African countries are poorer!! It consists of part of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic, a prospering country. French is an official language, one of the 2 countries in the Western Hemisphere with this characteristic (Canada is the other).

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Port-Au-Prince area. To a country that was already stumbling, with poor architecture, a bad economy and other things, this disaster was a crushing blow. but in this world, with the UN, most developed countries are expected to save a country like this from the brink of disaster. International rescue efforts, I think, have been taken for granted. For example, Rene Preval, President of Haiti, was complaining about the slowness of the efforts, when he should be thanking the gods for all the help he's getting. Now, this brings me to another point: the rescue efforts themselves. With so many private and government parties flying in at the same time, the 1 airport was greatly overloaded. Another problem was stampedes at the makeshift hospitals and food centers. In one case, a pregnant woman was trampled! Last but definitely not least is the occasional shootings in the capital city. All in all, this was a (forgive me) epic fail for the UN's ideals. Rescue efforts aren't supposed to cause harm!!!
