Day 4: Juneau, AK
At 6 AM on August 5, we reached the capital of Alaska, Juneau. It was actually quite a small town, and very scenic because of Mt Roberts and Mt Juneau right next to it. We took a bus tour around town, and it was quite enlightening. We saw the Alaska state capitol, where Sarah Palin worked until a couple of weeks ago, with its 20's art deco flat top. We also saw the Governor's Mansion, and the building that houses the fund that gives every resident of alaska money each year. The main stop on our tour was the Mendenhall Glacier. It was amazing! The setting was quite pristine, and so peaceful that I thought I could just go up and touch the ice and no one would get mad. I actually went right up to the shore of Mendenhall Lake, and held little pieces of glacier ice that had washed up on shore. Lastly, I saw the "famous" Red Dog Saloon, which is supposed to date back to mining times.
